We've all heard the news: overweight and obese teenagers are tipping the scales at an alarming rate. According to the Canada Health Measure Survey (2010), over 26% of children and youth are overweight. Additionally, 60% of Canadian youth do not get the required daily physical activity for optimum growth and development. A whopping 93% of children and youth are not meeting Canada's physical activity guidelines.
"At GoodLife, we are passionate about helping all Canadians become fit and healthy and we know the importance of starting healthy habits at a young age," said David Patchell-Evans, GoodLife Founder and CEO.
Cayley's Story
"Growing up in the small town of Exeter, Ontario, there have always been plenty of opportunities for me to get involved and be active. Over the years I have played many different sports including soccer, baseball, golf and most important to me, hockey. Being involved in sports has always been an important part of my life, and now, I am really beginning to recognize that these experiences have taught me everything from dedication and teamwork to leadership and sacrifice."
Olivia's Story
"My name is Olivia and I live in Windsor, Ontario. I am a 14 year old grade 8 student, who loves staying fit and active! With so much drama happening in my grade, I find playing sports and going for jogs help provide me with a quiet and peaceful sanctuary where I can get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Staying healthy and fit makes me feel energized and extremely confident. My body to me is like a car; I need to fill it with good quality gas, and I need to keep using it to make sure that it doesn't break down."
Freedom's Story
"My name is Freedom and I am 12 years old. I was born and grew up in London Ontario. At a young age I started exercising and working out because of my dad's job and my step mother's job. Both my parents work for GoodLife Fitness. My dad teaches BODYPUMP and RPM and my step mother teaches BODYVIVE and RPM and is a Divisional Manager. After that it sort of became a part of me. I think that my parents are very loving and strict about how I live. They want me to be polite, do my jobs and grow up to be the man they want me to be."
Eric's Story
"My name is Eric, I am 16 years old and I live in Strathroy, Ontario. As a kid, I was overweight and had very low self-confidence. I was always embarrassed to take my shirt off and I rarely took part in any sports. At the age of 10, my mom convinced me to join GoodLife. It introduced me to a whole new lifestyle. I started to build confidence as I lost weight and gained muscle. I've never looked back."
Matthew's Story
"Being an overweight child was really hard on me. I always felt self-conscious about myself and never felt confident. Through hard work and proper diet, I transformed into an entirely different person, 50 pounds lighter. I would run and bike everyday and limited the amount of food I ate. After shedding the weight, I felt much better about myself. GoodLife helped me reach my potential and aided me with keeping fit, so I no longer felt bad about myself. I now love to exercise and watch what I eat regularly so I can live a healthier life."
