Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

COVID-19 UPDATE | CLUBS CLOSED Effective Monday, March 16
Dear Valued Members,

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have been carefully monitoring the progression of the virus and closely following the advice of Canada’s public health authorities. We have followed their recommendations and have implemented numerous changes in our Clubs to focus on our highest priority—the health and safety of our Members, Associates and everyone in Canada.

As the virus continues to spread in communities across Canada, and with Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer raising the public risk to ‘serious,’ we are seeing the need for increasingly bold action to reduce the transmission.

I am writing to you to personally inform you that we have made the difficult but important decision to close all GoodLife Fitness and Fit4Less Clubs across Canada, effective immediately.

Our purpose has always been to give every Canadian the opportunity to live a fit and healthy life. There is no moment in our history where that purpose is more important than today. Like other businesses across the country, we are closing our doors to further limit the spread of this virus and to protect the most vulnerable in our community. It is the right thing to do.

We know that exercise is extremely important to an individual’s physical and mental health. For more than 40 years, GoodLife Fitness has been helping to transform the health and wellness of Canadians, and we are committed to continuing to do so throughout this difficult time. The GoodLife team is currently working on digital at-home fitness options. We will have more information for you on that in the coming days.

We are also committed to the well-being of our Associates, including those who will be without work during the closure. We have made the decision to continue to pay all of our people for the next two weeks to help lessen the financial burden of this tremendous change. We look forward to welcoming them all back when we reopen.

All Member payments are being suspended as of Tuesday March 17 and any paid-in-full Memberships will be put on freeze until further notice and expiry dates will be extended accordingly.

We look forward to reopening our doors as soon as possible and welcoming everyone back.

In the meantime, take care of yourself and each other.

Yours in Health and Fitness,

David Patchell-Evans

Policies, Rules and Etiquette

Policies, Rules and Etiquette - Behaviour & Dress
At GoodLife we strive to create an environment that is safe and welcoming. Our vision is to give all Canadians the opportunity to live a fit and healthy good life. We have a zero tolerance approach to abusive and aggressive behaviour.
We ask that you conduct yourself in a well-mannered fashion and approach other Members and Associates in a friendly and respectful way.
· When working on equipment we ask you to allow fellow Members to work in between sets.
· Please replace all weights/equipment to their proper place when you are finished using them.
· Place dumbbells/weight equipment lightly on the floor after each use.
· Use of mobile devices is permitted in common areas of the Club. Refrain from using mobile devices in the change rooms, Group Exercise classes or while using equipment.
· Request permission from Club management if you need to take photos or videos in the Club. Image capturing is not permitted in the change room area.
· Please be respectful of the Club hours and ensure you have enough time to leave the Club at or before the closing time.

· Any Member attending a Club without a valid Membership Card will be required to provide photo identification.
· When you scan into the Club, your picture will appear for the front desk Associate to verify that it is actually you using your Membership. This will protect you from having someone else use your card. Also, we need to always know who is in our Clubs to ensure the safety and security of our Members, as only authorized individuals are allowed in the Club.
· If you lose your key tag, you just need to bring photo identification to any gym location and we will be happy to replace your key tag at no charge.

Do you have a dress code at the gyms?

Gym Floor - For your health and safety, we ask that you wear appropriate exercise clothing that is respectable in nature as well as proper indoor athletic footwear. Guidance as to suitable attire may be obtained from the General Manager of the Club.

Winter Season – We ask that you remove all outdoor footwear when you enter the gym for cleanliness and safety reasons. Disposable booties are provided if needed.

Pool, whirlpool and Co-Ed Steam Rooms – Proper bathing attire is required, and Members must shower before entering a pool or spa.

Do you have AED units?
All of our Clubs are equipped with AED’s for use in emergency situations and our Associates are trained to use them.
Are your staff trained in CPR and First Aid?
Our staff are certified in CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators.
Where can I use my cell phone?
Cell phone use is not permitted in the change rooms, washrooms, saunas, pool areas, while using equipment, in the JUMP! Facilities or in the Group Fitness studio while a Class is in session, in any GoodLife Fitness Club. This is in place to protect the privacy and safety of everyone who is in the Club and to ensure courtesy around other Associates and Members.
I would like to take photos and/or videos in the Club, what are the rules?
We want to ensure GoodLife Clubs are a place of privacy and safety for all Members, Guests, and Associates. We understand that social sharing is very common, and we love to see our Members and Associates sharing their successes, but we want to do so in a way that doesn’t impact the experience of others.

Please keep the following in mind while capturing photo or video in our Clubs:

· Photos, videos, and video streaming ARE permitted in public areas of the Club.

· Photos, videos, and video streaming are NOT permitted in the Change Rooms, Saunas, Showers, Whirlpools/Spas, Pools, JUMP! Area, Tanning Rooms, or Private Offices.

· It is very important that no Members, Guests or Associates are captured in photos or videos without their verbal permission.

If you are interested in capturing photos or videos for professional purposes, or if you have a media request, please contact the GoodLife Media Relations team at
How old do I have to be to work out at GoodLife?
The minimum age to work out at GoodLife is 12-years-old. We require a parent or guardian’s signature for anyone under the age of majority in each province. In addition, we encourage all Members to get started on the right programming and those under 16 are required to participate in our Starter Program which includes multiple appointments on different topics to help them get comfortable in the gym.
Why can’t I use the area that Personal Trainers do?
In some GoodLife Clubs we have designated areas that are set up for Personal Trainers to work with their Clients. This helps to keep equipment on the workout floor available for the Members, as well as allowing the Personal Trainers to be able to maximize the workouts for their Clients. The Personal Training Only section in the Clubs is for our Members who have purchased Personal Training to use in their sessions when their Personal Trainer is present.
Can I drop my weights while I work out?
We do have a policy against dropping the weights in our Club, as this damages both the weights themselves and the floors. It is also very disruptive and can be intimidating to other Members.
How do I keep myself safe while working out with dumbbells?
It is always recommended to have a spotter when working out with free weights, especially heavy weights. When using dumbbells, make sure that the area around you is clear (to avoid pinching your hand on another dumbbell when putting it down) and that you are using a weight that you are able to handle safely.
Why can’t I use chalk?
We don’t allow the use of chalk as some Members have chemical sensitivities and chalk can cause a reaction. It also creates a mess and a potential slipping hazard when on the floor.
Can I pour water on the sauna heater?
No. Our saunas are dry, electric saunas, and pouring water on them can cause the unit to short out and require replacement, or in more severe cases cause a fire.
Fitness Competitions/Competitors
All Members and Associates that are working out must adhere to the dress code guidelines, including during ‘pre-show’ practice and modeling. Members and Associates in their competition outfit must remain covered up at all times while walking through the gym (once in the Studio their cover-up may be removed). High heels are not permitted to be worn on our Studio flooring.
How do we create a non-judgement environment that is inclusive for our Transgender Members?
At GoodLife, our purpose is to provide every Canadian with the opportunity to live a fit and healthy good life. As such we want to support all of our Members. We address each situation individually to work with the Member to determine what support we can provide that demonstrates caring for both this individual Member and our other Members. We look at each situation on a case-by-case basis, and guided by our commitment to demonstrate caring in all situations, we do whatever we can to help each Member, and the other Members at our Clubs, feel comfortable, welcome and supported. We allow them to use the change room of the gender that they identify with. At GoodLife, we are committed to providing welcoming and non-judgmental environments. We ask that our Members adopt this approach as well. If a Member is behaving in a way that is not in keeping with our no judgement philosophy, we will evaluate the status of their Membership and take appropriate action.

GoodLife Starter Programs
At GoodLife, our goal is to help you get the best start possible. We know that everyone’s fitness journey is a personal one, so we’ve created our GoodLife Starter Programs with that in mind. Our goal is to help you find the options that work best for you, allow you to fall in love with fitness and make it part of your daily life. We want you to get the help and support you need, when you need it, along with showing you all the variety you now have available.

There are many components of the GoodLife Starter Program outlined below. We hope that you will take advantage of them all. The purpose of the Program is to help you develop a plan for your first month of fitness, to provide valuable information to answer any questions you might have, and to make you feel welcome and comfortable in the Club.

Personal Training Starter and LifeChanger:
Personal Training provides you with the best possible start toward achieving your health and fitness goals. Your Trainer is focused on your goals, your health, well-being and your success. Through Starter Packages, you will build confidence as well as establish a habit of consistent workouts. This will guarantee your greatest success. Personal Training Starter Packages are available in 3 x one-hour and 6 x one hour packages.

You start with the LifeChanger appointment where you get a clear picture of your current lifestyle and health factors, and receive solutions for every major component of your Health and Fitness: Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep, and Stress Management. This appointment is followed by 3 or 6, one-hour, one-on-one Personal Training sessions. We encourage new Members to begin with a Personal Trainer Starter Package plus LifeChanger. If you did not choose this option when you joined, this one-time offer is still available to you at any time.

Fitness Starter:
The Fitness Starter is a one-on-one 60-minute session with a Personal Trainer where you discuss your lifestyle, goals and preferences. You will also learn valuable information about your physical health (ie. your blood pressure and body composition). Following this assessment, the Personal Trainer will lead you through a 30-minute demonstration on fitness equipment in the Club. They will offer tips and recommendations for your first month of workouts to help get you started on a path to success. They will also share the multiple programming options that are available and make recommendations on what would work best for you such as one-on-one Personal Training or Team Training.

Class Starter:
We have a Class Starter that can fit everyone’s schedule and fitness goals. The Class Starter helps you figure out which class or classes are your favourites. To learn more about a class, drop by the front desk 15 minutes before any class, or book an appointment with one of our Associates to explain a class and introduce you to the Instructor.

Fit-Fix Starter:
Do you need a workout that is fast and convenient? Our GoodLife 20-Minute Fit-Fix is for you. This fast, effective and easy workout can get you results in just 20 minute 3 times per week. This Starter appointment will show you how to use the Fit-Fix equipment as well as a proper warm-up. We also provide you with complete cardio training information.

Youth Starter:
For all Members who are 12-16 years old we have a mandatory Youth Starter. This Starter includes the Fit-Fix Starter along with the Youth Member FAQs and Club Etiquette. At the end of this Starter, you receive your Membership card and we ask that you try more options in our GoodLife Starter Program.

What is MYZONE?
Our goal is to help you see results and maximize your workouts. With so many different workout options, it can be hard to know which path to start on. Using your heart rate as your intensity guide is a convenient way to ensure effective workouts, no matter what you choose as your activity.

The World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. This works out to be 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity 5 times per week or 25 minutes of vigorous activity 3 times per week. Using the calendar, map out the days and times for activity that work for you so that it can fit into YOUR lifestyle. Your activity can include taking a Group

Fitness class, playing a sport, doing an active outdoor activity or coming into the gym for a Fit-Fix workout.

Working out in your targeted heart rate zone is the best way to focus on your specific goals and see great results. Depending on your fitness level and age, your heart rate zone will fluctuate. To find out what your training heart rate zone should be, please book a Fitness Starter or Fit Fix Starter or ask an Associate for details.

Working out in the Red and Yellow zones below are considered your vigorous-intensity zones.
Working out in the Blue and Green zones below are considered your moderate-intensity zones.
What is Max Heart Rate?
Maximum heart rate is the highest heart rate an individual can safely achieve through exercise stress.
How does MYZONE calculate my MAX heart rate?
MYZONE uses a formula derived by Londeree and Moeschberger (University of Missouri) to automatically establish your age predictive MAX HR: Max HR = 206.3 - (0.711 x age) This is based on population norms. If you are able to push your maximum HR past this limit, your MYZONE profile will automatically adjust to this new limit.
Will my MAX heart rate change over time?
Your maximum heart rate will reduce as you get older. It will not change aside from this although your ability to maintain a higher heart rate will increase with training.
What is resting heart rate and will my resting heart rate change over time?
Resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute while at rest. It is best to measure this first thing in the morning. As you become fitter, your resting heart rate will reduce as your heart becomes more efficient. Resting heart rate is not used in the calculation of MEPs for any information on your tile. It is only for informational purposes.
How does MYZONE establish my resting heart rate?
MYZONE sets your resting heart rate to 100 bpm (beats per minute) as standard. When you first register your belt it is recommended that you perform a resting heart rate test. This involves sitting or lying comfortably while wearing your belt for 10 minutes, ideally in the morning. When you next upload your data at the MYZONE Console, your resting heart rate will recalculate to your actual resting value. You can also ask your coach/trainer/teacher to adjust your resting heart rate if it does not appear to be accurate or if you have completed a resting heart rate test.
What is the belt cost for Members?
Members and Potential Members can purchase a MYZONE belt for only $129 + tax + shipping. That is a $70 savings on the retail value of this belt.
How do I purchase a MYZONE belt?
See an Associate to get a Member referral code. Next go to MYZONE. Enter the Associate’s Member referral code in the field provided and click “buy now”. Place your belt order and enter your shipping address. You will then be redirected to the credit card page where you will enter your form of payment. Once you have paid, you will be asked to register your belt and will be prompted to enter your birthdate, weight, height, email address and password.
What if I have questions about using my MYZONE belt?
Speak with a GoodLife Associate about any of the questions you may have. If you are unable to get the answer you are looking for you can connect with MYZONE support,, or through support on your MYZONE app.
What is a Member’s Facility ID?
When you buy a MYZONE from the ecommerce site, you will be presented with the opportunity to pre-register your belt. You will choose your home Club from a Club selector page, which will automatically pre-populate the Facility ID. If you do not pre-register your belt, you will have to get the Facility ID from an Associate at the Club. The Facility ID is GLFCAXXX. The “XXX” is the Club Number (ex. 127) you are registering to.
